I'm looking for general hiking info for the cabo area. There's not much detail on the web, waterfalls near Santiago is about all I can find. Anyone have any suggestions for day hikes? I have a condo in SJ and would like to explose areas by foot around this region. Thanks, Cheryl

Hiking in the Los Cabos area of Baja California Sur is eihter long beach hikes on the few remaiing empty beach areas or on up into the mountains and arroyos for some spectacular views.
Unfortunately hiking right out of San Jose wihtout driving will not provide you the best of hiking areas.

The mountians behind San Jose are pretty dry and not much to see. There are however some great mountains with rocky peaks that are easy day hiking up behind the Costco area in the corridor between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo. This area can be very enjoyable for sunrise or sunset hikes offering some of the most breathtaking views of the Bahia del Cabo.

If you don't mind driving then there are many areas fairly close to San Jose del Cabo to the north such as near Santiago as you have heard.

You may also find many trails leading off the "Ramal Naranja" (Orange branch) that you may find just north of the San Jose airport. Follow this road up into the mountian area of the Sierra Laguna and you will find several areas to begin hiking in.

There is not much in print concerning this area or that of Miraflores and the adjacent canyons that are located to the south of Santiago. While the Naranja road goes all the way to the pacific on a road(trail) it may not be passable with even a four wheel drive sometimes however it does get you up to the mountians where you can begin your day hiking.

Out of Santiago you can find several canyons with water such as in Aguas Calientes, San Dionosis adn La Zorra where many people go the waterfalls.

The best way to begin exploring these areas is to get yourself a copy of the topo maps available through INEGI the government agency which sells such maps. You might also take a look at Google Earth as several people have put up some photos and locations of these areas I speak of above.

We defintely recoginze the need to provide more of this type of inofrmation in the furture and invite anyone who knows more or would lik submitt articles and or photos on these areas to share their knowledge.
