Baja Weather - Tropical Storm Lowell to Turn for Baja California Sur

Sunday, 09/07/2008 10:56 PM MDT Tropical Storm Lowell (red arrow) has continued to strengthen slowly throughout the day today. TS Lowell is still not forecast to do any better than tropical storm intensity, but forecasts seem to be solidifying on a Baja landfall late next week, after Lowell executes a 90° turn to the NE. We will continue to monitor the progress of Tropical Storm Lowell.
There are some intense cells of thunderstorms (yellow arrow) off the coast of the mainland. These may drift west enough to influence Baja Sur in the afternoon, but usually these cells dry up before reaching Baja. W are just seeing the edge of Hurricane Ike, now a Category 3 Hurricane as it is forecast to move along the entire NE coast of Cuba. Where Ike will make landfall along the Gulf coast is still anyone's guess, but intensification will be possible again when Ike moves NW off the island of Cuba.

Wednesday, 08/06/2008 9:53 AM MDT A warm summer day throughout Baja today, as some scattered clouds will drift along the coastal areas of the Sea of Cortez (yellow arrow) Winds in the Sea are forecast to be light and variable under 10kts through the forecast period.
Down south, the system (magenta arrow) we have been watching for days has finally broken free from the ITCZ and the forecasters say has a strong chance for cyclonic development over the next 48hrs. This system is already too far west to be of concern to Baja. There are two tropical waves on our map (orange arrows) the westerrn most exciting the system we are currently watching, the eastern most has yet to develop activity. Baja California Weather

09AM MDT 07/01/08 A beautiful warm day across the peninsula today, with the exception of a few clouds (yellow arrow) which will drift over central Baja today. Winds in the Sea are forecast to be light, under 10kts from the south to SW through the forecast period.
The Eastern Pacific has it's first hurricane of 2008, Boris surprised the forecasters and achieve hurricane status last night. Hurricane Category 1 status is expected to be short lived however, as Boris should begin to diminish later today as it moves over colder waters.
A new systems looks like it will spin up to be our next tropical cyclone (magenta arrow) This system may become a tropical depression later today. It is currently forecast to move in a NW direction, bringing it closer to Baja than previous storms this season.
Right behind that, is another tropical wave (orange arrow) that is also showing signs of development. There are four additional tropical waves moving across the southern Caribbean at the moment. None of them have much potential for development in the Atlantic basin, so it is likely that all will make it to our basin in the next 10 days.
It could be a busy next few weeks in the Eastern Pacific Basin. Storms in July have come close enough to the peninsula to deliver rain and a little 'weather'. But the waters surrounding Baja are still too cold to support cyclonic activity and the earliest a tropical cyclone has made landfall in baja in Aug 15th.
